The Urban Juice Squad.
For this workshop we were asked to produce a promotional 'Juice Squad' member for The Urban Juicer, an organisation based in Nashville, Tennessee.
To begin, we researched various artists who's work we find inspiring to add inspiration towards our Urban Juice designs. I chose artists such as Kate Moross, Noel Fielding, Rob Ryan and Tim Burton as they are personally my favourite artists and I find their work intriguing and extremely inspiring.
After our research we began designing various possible ideas for our final Juice Squad member. I designed 18 possible Juice Squad designs. Each of them had inspiration from various artists, famous people and fruits.I gave each of them a name and some of them a slogan. For example:
My first design was inspired by a ballerina. I made a play on the word 'ballerina' and created the name 'bananarina' as a possible fruit for The Urban Juicers organisation is a banana. I chose the colour yellow for her skin as bananas are yellow and the colour of her dress is the same as that of a Raspberry, which is also a possible fruit flavour. I also created a slogan for this design which is 'I'm BANANAS for ballet!'
For my second design I was inspired by the famous musician and Beatles member John Lennon. Another possible flavour for the Urban Juicers is lemon, I took inspiration from that particular fruit as it has a similar sound to 'Lennon'. You can see that my inspiration for this design has originated from these two elements as i have chosen the colour of the Urban Juice members skin to be yellow, the same as a Lemon, and also this member is wearing glasses of the same style as John Lennon wore and I have also given him a tshirt which says 'Abbey Road' on it, which is a famous Beatles album. I have also created a slogan for this Urban Juice design which is 'All You Need Is LEMONS!' this originated from the famous Beatles song 'All You Need Is Love', as the features fruit in this design is lemons I changed the last word 'Love' to 'Lemons' so that it is associated with my design.
My third design was inspired by the fruit Coconut. Just like my previous two designs I made a play on the name of the chosen fruit and linked it to a 'Nutty Professor' which gave me the name 'Coconutty Professor' for my third design. I created this Urban Juice member to look like a nutty professor, this is shown as i have given it very messy grey hair which sticks up in spikey clumps, I have also made it's eyes look as if he is looking in different directions and made his tongue poke out it give him the 'nutty' look. His clothes are a white lab coat and a tshirt with the periodic table of elements on it which makes it known that he is a professor. His ears are brown which makes it clearer that this design was inspired by the fruit coconut, and also the white of his skin and his lab coat reflects the colour of an inside of a coconut.
Inspiration for my fourth design originated from another musical artist, Lana Del Rey and also the fruit Banana. You can see this as i have made Lana Del Rey's skin yellow, just like that of a banana. You can also see that this member has been based on Lana Del Rey as i have drawn her famous long brown hair and the iconic flower crown that Lana Del Rey wears. If I decide to chose this particular design i will create the 3D flower crown out of scrunched up pieces of red, purple and pink tissue paper. I made a play on the name Lana and the fruit banana to create the name for this member: Banana Del Rey
I used a well known film and book character for inspiration for my fifth design. The chosen character was Hobbit, Frodo Baggins from the well known Lord of the Rings book and film series. You can see evidence of this as I have given this member big feet, just like Hobbits have and i have also included this big pointy ears and dull brown clothing colours. I have chosen the flavour inspiration for this design to be 'chocolate orange' you can see this as the colour of the hair, arms, legs and the majority of the clothing of this Urban Juice member is brown, like that of chocolate and the tshirt and face is orange like an orange.
I was inspired by various fruits for my sixth design, this can be seen in the multicoloured body of this Urban Juice member. I have chosen the colours purple, red, orange, green, pink and blue to reflect grapes, strawberries, apple, raspberries and blueberries. This can also be seen in the face which I designed to resemble a watermelon and in the back of it's head which I designed to resemble grapes (this is shown via the colour purple) and raspberries (this is shown via the colour pink and also via the round berry shapes used). This simplicity of the face is inspired by famous artist and illustrator Nick Sharratt as in his work he created the features of his characters very bland and uninteresting which I think creates the opposite of the desired effect and makes them seem more interesting. I chose to name this Urban Juice member Bobby as I think it reflects his facial features; bland and quite uninteresting. The slogan for this design will be 'Fruitilicious!' as there is a wide variety of fruits features in this particular design.
Inspiration for my seventh design came from famous 'Doctor Who' actor Matt Smith, this is evident as I have given this Urban Juice member the famous shirt, bow tie, braces and long jacket style combo the same as Matt Smith's character; The Doctor. I have also included the sonic screwdriver in this design to make it more apparent that he is The Doctor. I have also used the fruit Mango as inspiration for this design, you can see this as I have given Matt Smith yellow skin, the same colour as a mango, I have named this Urban Juice member Mango Smith, as these two words associate with my inspiration.
My eighth design inspiration originated from famous musician and actor David Bowie. This can be seen in the way I have mimicked his make up style from the Aladdin Sane album cover which is a red and blue lightening bolt over his left eye; i have also shown Bowies different sized pupils in my design. The fruits which have inspired this design are: raspberries on his ears, blackberries on his legs, blueberries on his body and strawberries on his arms. As all of these fruits are berries I have made a play on the last name 'Bowie' and named this Urban Juice member David Berry.
The name of my ninth Urban Juice member is 'Crazy Sophia'. I chose this name as there is a lot going on in this design and it seems a little crazy. Inspiration for this came from famous artist Rob Ryan, this is evident as the image on the back of her head is similar as that of Rob Ryans work. Rob Ryan uses a lot of nature drawings in his artwork and also typography which is where my inspiration came from. I wrote the words 'Natural' and 'Healthy' within this design as these are both words which associate with the elements of the Urban Juice Organisation's products. I have also chosen the fruits watermelon, strawberries, bananas, apples, and lemons to be features in this Urban Juice member, this can be seen on the arms, legs, lips and on the ears. I also came across inspiration via famous musician and actor David Bowie, this can be seen on Crazy Sohpia's tshirt which shows 'Bowie' written in big letters across the front and on the back I have included the famous red and blue lightening bolt seen on the Aladdin Sane album cover. I have also recieved inspiration from the American flag as it possesses bright colours, this is evident as the shorts which Crazy Sophia is wearing show the red, white and blue stripes and stars, much like that of the American flag.
On the face of this Urban Juice member I have included flowers, I decided upon this floral design as it reflects the Urban Juice Organisations natural, healthy, fresh and raw ingredients which are used.
For design number ten has been inspired by the loving pet, a dog. I chose this animal as they are happy and lively and reflect the characteristics the Urban Juice organisation try to create for their customers. I gave this dog the name Augustus as it is different and exotic, I was also inspired by the vegetable carrots hence why I featured it in this design by adding green leafy hair like that of a carrot, i also chose to give Augustus a tshirt with a carrot on it which says 'I heart carrots' on it.
Design number eleven has been inspired by two fruits, lemons and strawberries. This is evident I have given this Urban Juice member red hair, the same colour as a strawberry and also like a strawberry I have included the black seeds. This member also has yellow ears, hands and feet, the same colour as lemons and it also shows a tshirt with a lemon on it. The name for this design member is Jared, I chose this name as it is unusual and different and will capture the customers attention.
Inspiration for design number twelve has come from both apples and grapes. You can see this as the dress this Urban Juice member is wearing is purple and it is wearing a necklace with a pink grape on it. The skin of this design member is green, much like an apple and so is it's hair. I have also been inspired by the fruit strawberries, the is evident as this Urban Juice member has strawberry earring in her ears. I have named this design Jennifer, I chose this name as it contradicts her character, which is different and quirky. I have also created a slogan for this Urban Juice member which is: 'My name's Jennifer, it's GRAPE to meet you!'
For design number thirteen I featured various different fruits, you can see this it's whole body is covered in many different colours which each represent a different fruit such as: grapes, raspberries, lemons, apples, pears, strawberries, watermelon, orange, plum, blueberries and blackberries.I chose the name 'Fergus the Fruit Salad' for this Urban Juice member as, like fruit, Fergus begins with an F and it is an unusual and exotic name. I chose to add 'the Fruit Salad' to his name as a fruit salad is commonly made up of various different fruits just like Fergus. The slogan for this Urban Juice member is 'I'm made of many FRUITS!' I chose this as it promotes the fruitiness of Fergus the Fruit Salad and exposes his healthiness.
For my fourteenth design has been inspired by a common and widely love animal, the monkey. I chose this animal as it is very popular and is well known for being a banana-lover which relates greatly to the Urban Juicers organisation. I also chose the features fruit to be a banana as it widely associated with the monkey. This is evident as I have added a banana to the monkeys hand. I decided to name this design 'Martin Monkey' as, like the word monkey, Martin begins with an M which will draw attention to this Urban Juice member. The slogan for this design is 'I love BANANAS!' which will be written in a speech bubble coming out of Martin Monkeys mouth. I chose this slogan as it will grab children's attention and they will think 'Martin Monkey loves bananas so I want to love banana's too'.
Design number fifteen has been inspired by four fruits. The first fruit is a peach, this is evident as the face and hair of this Urban Juice member is peach coloured. The second fruit is strawberries, you can see this via the red dress with black seeds on it which reflects a strawberries design. The third fruit I have featured in this design is a raspberry, I have shown this through the colour of this members skin which is the same as that of a raspberry. Featured fruit number four is an apple, this is evident as I have used the colour green as the colour for the ears of this design as it it the same colour as an apple. I have chosen Fruity Princess as the name of this Urban Juice member as it has been inspired by various fruits and the word 'princess' is associated with all things good, pure, healthy and natural, much like the Urban Juicers organisation products. I have made it evident that this Urban Juice member is a princess via the crown on her head which will draw attention to this particular design especially children.
Graffiti Graham is the name of my sixteenth design. I have chosen this name because the back of this Urban Juice member is covered in a lot of typography, which looks like graffiti. Inspiration for this design has originated from famous artist Kate Moross, who frequently uses typography in her work. Words featured in this design are: juicy, live clean, energy, green, living, refreshing, natural, soul, pure, mind, amazing colours, raw, fresh, urban and juice squad. I have chose these words as they are all associated with the Urban Juicers organisation and promotes the type of lifestyle they wish their customers to live. I have also been inspired by the fruit watermelon, strawberries, bananas, blueberries and lettuce. this is evident as the ears of Graffiti Graham resemble strawberries, his skin is yellow like that of a banana, his feet resemble watermelon, his fingertips are blue and look like blueberries and there are lettuce leaves on the top of his head. I have also included tattoos on this design of a banana and a strawberry.
My seventeenth design has been hugely based on famous artists, producer, director, poet and writer Tim Burton. I have drawn inspiration from the way he creates his artwork to have a slight and subtle dark element to it.I have made this apparent by adding dark circles under this Urban Juice members huge eyes, and also creating this member Frankenstein-like. I also received my inspiration for this from a bestselling author, Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein, the 1818 gothic fiction novel, which has been turned into various films by various different writers. Tim Burton himself has created a film based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein called Frankenweenie. I have achieved this Frankenstein look by separating the face and body into various different segments and designing each segment to look like a different fruit for example: kiwi, orange, pomegranate, watermelon, apple, peach, carrot and strawberry. I have also featured the fruit coconut in this design, this is evident as the hair of this Urban Juice member is brown, much like that of a coconut. I have named this design Frankenfruit as it is a Frankenstein-like character who is made up of various fruits.
My eighteenth and final design for the Urban Juicers organisation goes by the name of Sebastian the Cat.The fruits I have featured in this design are: carrots (you can see this as the ears are orange with dashes of green, like a carrot), bananas (you can see this as the face is, like a banana, yellow), grapes (this is evident as this Urban Juice member has arms that are purple like grapes), strawberries (i have made this known by adding a strawberry-style pattern on the back of Sebastian's head), raspberries (you can see this as there is a pink raspberry pattern on the back of this member), watermelon (this is evident as the legs are red and green, like the inside and outside of a watermelon). I have also added lettuce in this design, you can see this on the top of this Urban Juice members head, I have placed the lettuce on the top of the head to create the look of two cat ears. I have also created the face of Sebastian to resemble that of a cat by adding big eyes with flicks on either side to create the 'cat-eye' look. I have also added a heart shape nose and faint whiskers. I chose to have 'FRUIT' written on the tshirt of this member as it would promote the healthiness of Fruit to customer and it will encourage children to want something healthy, like an Urban Juicers organisation product if they see 'Sebastian the Cat' supporting fruit.
My Final Design.
The stars and stripes American flag style ears came from design idea number nine, I chose to use this as I think it stands out and is also quite different and eye catching.
The floral design on the top of my final designs head also came from design number nine.Flowers possess raw, healthy, lively and natural qualities, much like the Urban Juicers organisation, which is why this was chosen. Also from design number nine I have used the Rob Ryan style image on the back of it's head. I thought this would be a good element to use as it stands out and looks the most interesting.
I have decided upon the name 'Jessie' for my final Urban Juice member creation. I have chosen this name as it has a similar sound to 'Juice' therefore the name 'Jessie Juice Squad' has a ring to it which will capture customers attention. Another reason I have chosen this name is because it could be short for Jessica, which is typically a female name or it could be 'Jessie' or 'Jesse' as a males name. This face that the name 'Jessie' is unisex would prevent children from not wanting to have this product because 'it's a girl' or 'it's a boy' they can chose themselves what gender they want this Urban Juice member to be.
